"GILBERT BROWN'S ALL-PRO FOOTBALL CAMP"
Sponsored by Time Warner Cable & Kiss 103.7 FM
In Association with the Milwaukee Recreation Department/North
Division Community Department
FREE Milwaukee Skills Camp Offered for Kids 8-17
Former
Green Bay Packers' star Nose Tackle Gilbert Brown, an anchor at
the center of the defensive line that helped the Packers win
Super Bowl XXXI, will be offering kids a chance to hone their
football skills when they attend the free "Gilbert Brown's
All-Pro Football Camp" sponsored by Time Warner Cable, Kiss FM &
The Milwaukee Recreation Department/North Division Community
Department.
"Gilbert Brown's All-Pro Football Camp" will be free to
children between the ages of 8 and 17 who apply on a first come,
first served basis. A morning session (8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., 8
to 12 years old) and an afternoon session (2:00 - 5:30 p.m., 13
to 17 years old) will be offered to the first 250 kids who apply
for each session.
"Gilbert Brown's All-Pro Football Camp" will seek to teach the
kids attending not only skills related to the football field,
but life building skills, as well. While Gilbert and his
coaching staff will be teaching the game of football, they will
also be impressing upon the kids the need to:
•
Stay in school, pay attention and get a solid education;
• Seek and identify alternative career options after sports to
fall back on;
•
Learn to work as a team and to work well with others in varied
and sometime stressful situations;
•
Be on time;
•
Listen fully, process completely and respond properly;
•
Respect others, especially parents and authority figures;
•
Gain a greater sense of awareness and presence of mind, in an
attempt to establish a high level of self confidence.
Over
the years Gilbert's high level of play, warm personality, his
celebratory "Gravedigger" dance following a monstrous tackle and
instant connection he made with Packer fans have made him an
icon in Wisconsin. Gilbert still finds time to reach out to his
many fans and supporters in many ways and "Gilbert Brown's
All-Pro Football Camp" is just another example of his commitment
to community and service.
An underlying reason for bringing the camp together in a short
period of time is that it is to serve as a fundraiser for a
young man named Jonathan Branch that Gilbert has befriended and
is trying to help. Jonathan's mother, Ms. Rebecca Johnson,
has been diagnosed with an advanced form of cervical
cancer. She has been left unable to work or support her
family.
Gilbert
has already made personal appearances on behalf of Jonathan in
an attempt to raise awareness and a minimum of $25,000.00 to go
toward Jonathan's high school and living expenses, and to help
make the transition into college and adult life a little easier.
In addition, Gilbert would like camp proceeds (from sponsors and
donors) to be used to cover all funeral costs that the family
would normally have been burdened with.
Gilbert will be calling upon many of his friends currently
playing for the Green Bay Packers to come down and help coach
"Gilbert Brown's All-Pro Football Camp" attendees. In addition,
many other MPS football coaches will be volunteering alongside
their Packer counterparts.
